Young Adult Retreat – Changing Times
“After camp what do I do?”
This is the question many young adult burn survivors ask when they can no longer attend burn camp with the “kids”, but are not ready for the adult world of “old” burn survivors.
Changing Times, a weekend retreat was designed to be a transition for young adult survivors, to help the transition from the years at Missouri Children’s Burn Camp (MCBC) into adult lives and other support systems. Of course, if you are a young adult burn survivor who never attended MCBC… this is for you, too.
There is an identified need to put together support for you, a young adult burn survivor, during a tough and already challenging time in your life. Changing Times is here to help you with life skills and other helpful directions for entering adulthood whether you chose to attend college, technical school or the working world.
Young adult burn survivors face unique issues during the transition phase of development to adulthood. You are often acutely aware that the issues you now have differ substantially from those you had as a young child. These new issues typically relate to body image, relationships and career development, leaving you feeling confused in a world in which you may find it hard to find acceptance. It is essential for you to clear up this confusion and make sense of it, so you can plan a future direction with a meaning and purpose.
Changing Times is an empowering 3-day weekend revolving around self-discovery and providing a venue where you can:
- Talk openly and honestly about the issues surrounding your life after a burn injury
- Learn to develop a new understanding of your true abilities and capabilities
- Identify your potential and find ways to fully develop your strengths
- Participate in group discussions regarding effective coping skills and self-esteem, leading to self-acceptance
- Provide support to others through peer group support network.
There will be a variety of different meetings and topics to be discussed, 3 meals a day, evening activities, outdoor activities (weather permitting), time to make new friends, time to talk, and…FUN
