The Starfish

Published February 10, 2020

An elderly man was walking on a beach, when he came upon a boy surrounded by hundreds of starfish that had washed up on the shore. As fast as he could, the boy was picking them up and throwing them back into the ocean.

Puzzled, the elderly man asked, “Little boy, what are you doing?” The youth responded, “I’m trying to save these starfish, sir.”

The old man laughed and said “Son, there are hundreds of starfish and only one of you. What difference can you make?”

As he tossed a starfish into the water, the boy said to the elderly man – “it makes a difference to that one.”

At Burns Recovered, the "starfish" we assist are the burn survivors of Missouri, Kansas, Southern Illinois, and beyond. We provide outreach, education and support that is tailored to each burn survivor’s individual needs. Additionally, we offer peer group sessions, summer camp, and other social opportunities that provide a chance for burn survivors to be in relationship with others who understand and care about their anxieties, as well as to provide a larger network of support.

If you or someone you know is a burn survivor, please reach out to us! Our office staff, along with our volunteer corps of first responders, healthcare workers, and others genuinely care about you and your recovery.

To learn more about the services we offer, or to schedule a time to meet with our office staff, please call (314) 939-1550 or email brsg@brsg.org.

Wishing you peace and all good,
